It&#8217;s been a wild ride. We&#8217;re enjoying it now, but initially it was quite a shock. Here are some of the changes:<\/p>\n<table border=\"1\" frame=\"box\" rules=\"all\" cellpadding=\"4\">\n<colgroup>\n<col width=\"14%\" \/>\n<col width=\"43%\" \/>\n<col width=\"43%\" \/> <\/colgroup>\n<tbody valign=\"top\">\n<tr>\n<td><\/td>\n<td><strong>Old: Utah<\/strong><\/td>\n<td><strong>New: Norcal<\/strong><\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>gig<\/td>\n<td>23 total years at Novell, last project: Novell Cloud Security Services (identity services)<\/td>\n<td>1.5 years at <a href=\"http:\/\/cloudfoundry.com\/\">VMware Cloud Foundry<\/a> (identity services)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>rig<\/td>\n<td>4wd SUV<\/td>\n<td>sporty hybrid hatchback<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>digs<\/td>\n<td>big new house on a golf course in the foothills<\/td>\n<td>quaint rambler built in 1922 &#8212; 1\/2 the space for 3x the cost<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>OS<\/td>\n<td>Linux, Windows, NetWare<\/td>\n<td>initially Mac OSX with Linux in a VM, but I rebelled back to Linux, where the user experience and package management are more consistent<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>code<\/td>\n<td>C\/C++, C#, Java<\/td>\n<td>Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Java, some Go and Scala<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>VCS<\/td>\n<td>Subversion, Continuus<\/td>\n<td>all git, all the time<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>release cycle<\/td>\n<td>once a year or two<\/td>\n<td>twice a week<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>team culture<\/td>\n<td>circle the wagons and defend turf from intruders (and management)<\/td>\n<td>aggressive and competitive internally and externally, very open to alliances with other groups<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>hallway banter<\/td>\n<td>child raising techniques, church activities, the impending doom of the company<\/td>\n<td>programming languages, startups, new tech, cycling, public transportation, wineries, kids, live music venues, vacation destinations, weekend festivals, sailing<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>politics<\/td>\n<td>Republican (Utah, duh)<\/td>\n<td>Democrat (bay area, duh)<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>climate<\/td>\n<td>very cold in winter, very hot in the summer<\/td>\n<td>mild all the time with some spectacular days, but mostly feels somewhat cold<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>yard intruders<\/td>\n<td>deer, mice<\/td>\n<td>raccoons (up to 6 at a time), rats<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<tr>\n<td>picnic supplies<\/td>\n<td>must be planned: wine purchased at rare state stores with limited hours, food must be purchased somewhere else<\/td>\n<td>a quick stop to any grocery store or corner mart and you&#8217;re set<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Overall, change can be a very good thing. And We&#8217;re enjoying the adventures and cycling a lot.
